Design Principles

Illuminate
For one of out first assignments for Suzanne's drawing class was titled "Illuminated objects." At first I could not figure out why I was choosing five items to draw that have some importance to me. It was when I read for Patrick's class about ancient Egypt that I could clearly make a connection to my drawing class. I chose to draw my I-Pod, because it is very important to me, and I realized that the pyramids are very important to the Egyptians because they entomb their great Pharaohs within them. Thus one being because of their religion, so that the king will have a glorious afterlife. And second they wanted to memorialize the kings greatness by constructing a magnificent tomb for the late Pharaoh.

Idiom
Idiom has many different meanings but one I am focused on is; a distinct style or character, in art or music (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/idiom). I believe that the egyptian writing style, in many ways, was an art form. The symbols were not just thought up randomly, the symbols told a story, which made the story within a story, which is very unique. Also I believe that their architecture also describes what culture designed the art, and in a way it also communicates with the viewer. But i also believe that we can communicate through our mistakes for instance in 1932 the "international style"(Roth,12), of architecture was introduced, limiting our abilities.

Materials
The materials that will be used on a structure can vary in many ways, there are so many. But I believe that the materials that are chosen should really show the work off and bring out its environment and microenvironment. I decided to use watercolors for my drawing mainly for practice but also to show how they can be used to make something look unique.

Commodity, Firmness, and Delight

There are many definitions for commodity but in the architecture sense it relates to the function of a space. Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe refers to commodity as a "universal space"(Roth,14). Le Corbusier said that it was possible to design "one single building for all nations and climates" (roth, 14). Firmness relates to how a building or structure stands. It refers to the structure, physical which is the skeleton of the structure, and perceptual which is what we see. "Architecture is the crystallization of it's inner structure, the slow unfolding form. That is the reason why technology and architecture are so closely related"(Roth,25). Delight refers to how architecture manipulates it's space. I believe these go together really well because I feel that it is how we as human beings perceive a space.

Finally I believe that all of these terms go well together because we learn from our previous structures and we need to focus on how a building functions and it's purpose. And we should use our materials that are around us to make an object one with it's environment. Louis I. Kahn said that "when you make a building, you make a life. It comes out of life, and you really make a life. It talks to you. When you have only the comprehension of the function of a building, it would not become an environment of a life"(Roth, 12)
