Opus 3

Scale
For the term scale I decided to choose to do the pyramids because they tend to show how large and important they are by belittling their surroundings. Not only are they massive structures but they also tend to blend in with what is around them, or utilize the materials within their environment. This is a quick sketch I did to show the scale and how they blend in with their surroundings. Herodotus said that Egypt "is the gift of the river (Roth, 188)." Which meant in order for them to understand the land they must first understand the river and it's geography.
Unity
To express unity I decided to choose the post and lintel construction of the Greek Megaron. I chose this not only because it is a great design technique, but it really applies to the term of unity very well. Even though the Greeks did not invent the system they are the people that first come to mind in my eyes. The post and lentil design actually gives a design a new level of continuity that I feel is lacking without it.

Section
A section is an object that has been cut to show what the eye cannot see or it's a portion or part of a larger object. And in drafting we actually are studying wall sections and learning their purpose. I think that a section of an object gives a sense of seeing the larger picture and puts it more into proportion.

Boundaries
For boundaries I decided to sketch out a wall and a path, not only because we are studying walls in studio but because they do direct you where to go and send across a strong message as well. In ancient Egypt they used large statues of what seem to be guards of some sort, outside of the temples to make sure that the pharaohs were protected by a higher force.

Vignette
In Suzanne's class we learned to start drawing utilizing vignettes. And I think that they are a great tool to communicate ideas but to also make them look rather decent as well. They are also rather quick and easy but fun as well. They are similar to how the Egyptians used hieroglyphics to communicate to other cultures and or generations.
Finally
The pyramids are very large structures that are made up of many small stones that unify to make the large structure. And since they blend in with their environment the create another sense of unity. The structures are completed in sections, meaning one part is done at a time. The walls come together and set up a boundary but also the guards create another boundary, then a boundary is created on the inside of the structure with tunnels and booby traps. Lastly a vignette can be made to illustrate and document how all of these terms come together to create one.
