Diagrams vs Narratives

Taking inspiration from the world “reverberate,” in the first space the user will immediately get the feeling of continuity. From the second you open the door you will see the column continuing up through the mezzanine and greeting the ceiling of the space. One would also be quick to notice that the frosted glass partition, in which your coat is being hung, is continued on the floor above. But beyond the threshold and the column the kitchen counter and shelving units wrap around the space and create a floating staircase.  But the shelving does not stop there. It continues down the foyer leading to the bathroom, creating storage for linens and other bathing supplies. As you are under the staircase a void in the wall has made itself present and you are now peering into the bathroom, in which the shelves are yet again continued. Make your way up the stairs and you will notice that a wall has continued from the floor below to divide the sleeping and self-reflection areas. Throughout the experience the materials of the space have remained the same, giving the full effect of continuity.

In the second space my goal was to make the user feel as if they were being forced to relax. This idea derives from recoil and rebound, which happens to be one of the definitions of “reverberate.” As you enter you will notice there is a place for resting/self reflection sunken into the floor. Right above this space is your private sleeping quarters, which rests just above the tops of the windowsills. The two columns supporting the sleeping area, frame out the windows making sure not to obstruct any natural light. The columns also act as a barrier to guide traffic around the resting area. Hidden on the back wall you will see an opening leading to the bathrooms. As you retrace your steps you will notice the kitchen just across from the resting areas. Thus the space giving all of the necessary centers for everyday life.

The final space abstracted its form from a low frequency sound wave. The space, similar to the sound wave has three levels; low, mid, and high. On the entrance level is where all of the social interaction and public events take place. The kitchen and sleeping areas are contained on the second level, while the bathing area is left on the third level. As soon as you step through the door you’re on the outskirts of the entertainment area. You hang up your coat and go right, up the stair to the kitchen. To the left you will see that the bathing areas are semi open and revealing, however, they are on a different level, which adds privacy. You can choose to go through the restroom and to the sleeping area or there are stair provided right before the shower. As the level drops you’re now standing in the bedroom, which is also open. The solids of the space house almost everything needed while giving the user a generous amount of room to breath.
